Health and Physical Education

​Health and physical education (HPE) is studied as a compulsory subject in junior secondary, and focuses on building the foundational areas of Health, Physical Activity and Personal Development.

 

Students study a number of introductory units during Year 8 including the basic concepts of Fitness, Health and Wellness.  Some of the topics students may engage in studying are:

  • Personal fitness

  • The dimensions of health

  • The effects of exercise on a human being

  • Health trends that contribute to healthy decisions 

  • Strategy development for decision making to minimise personal risk.

  • Human developmental stages related to physical and emotional changes of adolescence. 

  • Concepts of first aid and injury prevention

  • Principles of fitness and training

 

Students in Health & Physical Education will also participate in various physical activities over the course of their studies.  Physical activities for junior secondary include, however are not limited to:

  • Modified games

  • Bat and ball sports

  • Athletics

  • Touch

  • Volleyball

  • Basketball​
