Device Selection

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Springfield Central State High does not recommend or endorse a particular computer brand, model or supplier. You have the freedom of purchasing a laptop that best suits your personal needs and budget requirements.​

However, the device you choose to purchase must meet the minimum specifications and must have a compatible operating system​.​


Devices that are NOT Compatible?

  • Linux Devices – These devices are not compatible with BYOx solution

  • Chromebooks  – These devices are not compatible with BYOx solution

  • Windows 10S   – Windows 10S cannot run software that has not been downloaded from the Windows Store. Devices with Windows 10 S Mode are compatible but require additional steps

  • Android Tablets are not supported - ie Galaxy tablets etc

NAPLAN / EXAM Requirements for Devices

NAPLAN and Exam conditions require students to use Plug in Headphones. this can be either one via the standard Headphone jack (3.5mm) or by USB. Wireless or Bluetooth headphones/earpods are not supported.

Microsoft Windows Device Specifications

General Learning Devices

These devices will be suitable for general Learning purposes, excluding Video Editing, CAD etc. Intel or AMD CPU, 8GB Ram, 256GB HDD minimum, Battery sufficient to last 8 hours on Balanced Power Mode. Minimum ​Wireless 5Ghz 802.11AC


High End Devices

These devices will be suitable for High End Tasks, including Video Editing/Encoding, CAD, VR etc. Core i5/Core i7 CPU, 16GB Ram, 512GB - 1TB HDD, Seperate GPU (eg. Nvidia RTX) Battery sufficient to last 8 hours on Balanced Power Mode, Minimum Wireless 5Ghz 802.11AC.​

​Macbook Air OSX 10.15 or Higher, Wireless 5Ghz, 128GB HDD minimum​

Macbook Pro OSX 10.15 or Higher, Wireless 5Ghz, 256GB SSD minimum


Apple iPad Device Specifications​​

IPads with an iOS level of 10+ can be connected to the BYOx network but these devices will not be able to support effective learning when:

  • Access to network file shares and printing is required because iPads cannot connect to these services;
  • Significant text entry is required because the screen keyboards on these devices are not suitable for ergonomic large text input (a Bluetooth keyboard would be needed);
  • Use of school software licensed for BYOx devices is required because the software runs only on Windows or Mac devices.
Students are expected to have a laptop computer sufficient for their curriculum needs as defined in the specifications on this page.

Optional (but recommended): accidental damage insurance.
