The Australian Curriculum has been develop by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and is three-dimensional. The three dimensions include learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities. These all contribute to a well-rounded education of all Australian students, providing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for life and work in the 21st century.
At Springfield Central SHS, we are aligned to the Australian Curriculum's eight learning areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- The Arts
- Technologies and
- Health and Physical Education
- Languages
General capabilities are a key dimension of the Australian Curriculum, supporting young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. In the Australian Curriculum, general capabilities are addressed through the learning areas and are identified where they offer opportunities to add depth and richness to student learning. The Australian Curriculum includes seven general capabilities. These are:
- Literacy capability
- Numeracy capability
- Information and Communication Technology capability
- Critical and Creative Thinking capability
- Personal and Social capability
- Ethical Understanding capability
- Intercultural Understanding capability.
The Australian Curriculum is designed to meet the needs of students by delivering a relevant, contemporary and engaging curriculum that builds on the educational goals of the Melbourne Declaration.
Cross-curriculum priorities are addressed through learning areas and are identified wherever they are developed or applied in content descriptions. Cross-curriculum priorities are also identified where they offer opportunities to add depth and richness to student learning in content elaborations. They will have a strong but varying presence depending on their relevance to the learning area. In the Australian Curriculum, the three cross-curriculum priorities are:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Histories and Cultures
- Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia
- Sustainability
